Teaching Toddlers at Home
It’s never too early to start teaching your child about shapes! This video will show you how to introduce your toddler to geometry. Let’s learn along with Max, and continue reading below to find out more about teaching your toddler at home!
Geometry for Toddlers
Learning about shapes is learning about the basics of geometry. Give your toddlers a head start by teaching them about shapes. Cut out shapes on paper for a circle, a square, a triangle. Ask your toddler to pronounce each word as you hold up your cut-out. Can your toddler identify items around your home by their shape? Can your toddler identify the difference between the shape of a circle and a square? When you teach them to pronounce the words for a circle and square, you are helping them expand their vocabulary, too.
Math and Exercise for Toddlers
Years of national research confirm that exercise helps improve your toddler’s health and ability to learn. You can teach your toddler about math (numbers) and exercise. Ask your young toddler to count to three by stepping up and down three times. 1, 2, 3. If you have steps, ask your toddler to count as you both walk up the stairs, and then down the stairs. As your child masters each set of numbers, add another number with another movement. 1, 2, 3, 4.
A Note to Parents
Teaching toddlers at home should not end as daycare centers reopen. During even typical summer breaks, national studies report that school children of every age can lose as much a 20% to 50% of the skills they learned during the school year. These studies were published before this year’s pandemic led to months-long closings of schools and daycare centers. To help your child catch up and excel, continue teaching your children at home as you are able. Ask older siblings and other relatives to be teachers, too.
