Hot Weather Fun for Toddlers: Paint-sicles!
August is a hot summer month in San Antonio. So, let’s bring out the paint-sicles. Put a few drops of food coloring or washable kid paint in the bottom of each section of a plastic ice cube tray. Fill the rest of each section with water, and swirl around to mix your “paint.”
When the “paint cubes” are almost frozen, (Think: slushy.), insert a popsicle stick for a handle. Then, finish freezing your ice paint tray.
Spread giant pieces of paper or poster boards outside on the ground, and watch your toddler’s inner artist take it from there. As the frozen “paint-sicles” melt, kids can use them to paint colorful patterns or swirls. When the paint has melted, collect the popsicle sticks to make another try of frozen paint for the next hot summer day.
Toddlers develop sensory skills when they observe and touch the paint when it’s frozen and when it melts. Art projects help young children develop their creative skills – which education studies show can lead to later success at school.
